When it was announced that the Farrelly brothers were attempting to bring the Three Stooges to modern audiences via a big screen outing,we were told Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey were in line to play Larry, Moe and Curly. Flash forward to 2011, and the first trailer for the film has arrived with TV stars Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso in the lead roles. In Hollywood terms, this is a bit like being offered prime fillet steak for tea and ending up with a dollop of Princes' canned meat.
The best Farrelly brothers movies, such as There's Something About Mary and Stuck on You, carefully combined low-rent laughs with plenty of heart and a fair amount of puerile charm. Perhaps The Three Stooges will do the same, but when the promo is all boobs, bums and reality TV stars, warning bells begin to ring pretty loud.
The new movie is said to be split into three sections – mirroring the short format of the original 30s and 40s films – beginning from the point when Larry, Curly and Moe are dumped in a burlap sack on the doorstep of the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage as sprogs. One of those sections sees the trio involved with the cast of MTV mega-hit Jersey Shore, which I've never seen, but whose presence hardly suggests the Farrellys are aiming for timeless classic status. Elsewhere, nothing says "out of ideas" like a voluptuous nun in a swimming costume.
For Stooges fans, there are of course myriad nyuk nyuks, finger pokes and noggin knocks, and even an attempt to bring the trio into 2011 via a yawnworthy iPhone joke, but otherwise there really is nothing to see here. No wonder Penn, Del Toro and Carrey ran a mile.
